Passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 20, 2018. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Ann G. Ford, and son, Jeff (Susan) Ford. Surviving children are Gary (Pat) W. Ford and Judye (Joe) Osborne. He leaves seven loving grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. His career included more than 30 years at the Department of Justice, retiring as Deputy Assistant Attorney General. WILLIAM EDWARD LAWLER, JR.  (Age 84)

William Lawler known to all as Bill, passed away at home on December 17, 2018 surrounded by his family. Born in Scranton, son of the late Dr. William E. and Claire Mullen Lawler, Bill was a graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s University and spent his career as a stockbroker in Washington, DC. A man of deep faith, he was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Bethesda, MD, the John Carroll Society and a Knight of the Order of Malta. After retirement, Bill volunteered at San Miguel School in Washington, DC and at Gift of Peace. Bill was predeceased by the love of his life, Mary Gorman Lawler, and is survived by his children William Lawler III (Lisa), Maria Lawler Perry (Michael), and Andrew Lawler; and his five grandchildren Caroline Lawler, William Lawler IV, Andrew Perry, Christopher Perry and Claire Perry. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 7500 Pearl St., Bethesda, MD 20814 on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 10 a.m. with visitation before the Mass at the church at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Miguel School, 7705 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20012.

CROGGON-EDWARDS, Catherine J.

Catherine Jeanette  Croggon-Edwards (Age 97) 

On Friday, December 14, 2018, Six-generation Washingtonian, and Beloved wife of the late Eugene S. Edwards; mother of Eugene R. Edwards (Christine), Nancy L. Edwards, Kathleen A. Oxenburg (Jim) and Ronald T. Edwards. She is also survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Catherine had a beautiful singing voice and she sang the leads in the operettas at Roosevelt High School before graduating from Central High School in 1939. While attending Roosevelt, she was offered a scholarship for her vocal talents, however, she turned down the scholarship in order to get married. Catherine accomplished many things in her long life including having a loving family, working for Edward Wright real-estate (1949), as well as several other real-estate companies. She was also a medical secretary for the Chief of Staff, Ernest Gould, at the Hospital Center in 1958, and various other well-known doctors in the city. Catherine started looking into her family’s genealogy in 1956 and continued studying it for 60 years or more. In the last 15 years she became a professional genealogist. In April 1984 she sang at the Chevy Chase Women’s Club for over 500 people and she became a favorite among the different performers that night. The Chevy Chase Woman’s Club received a Fine Arts Award on behalf of Catherine’s outstanding singing.

Entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Christian Brothers) on August 29, 1966. Bro. Barry taught at Calvert Hall, Bishop Walsh, St. John’s, La Salle College High Schools, and retired to La Salle Hall. Member of The Providence Volunteer Fire Company, Towson, MD for 40 years. He is survived by his sister Mary Frances Duerr and his fellow Christian Brothers. On Thursday, December 6, 2018 Ruby was called home by her Lord and Savior. She was predeceased by her Beloved husband Raymond A. Lang, survived by daughters Linda Lang and Donna Gardner (Joseph), and Cherished grandsons Warren Ray Gardner and Eric Joseph Gardner. She is also survived by her only remaining and treasured sibling, Bernice Sesler, as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be held Friday December 14, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the Chapel at The Village at Rockville, 9701 Veirs Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. Private Interment following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to a charity of your choice.
OBITUARY

Ruby Franks Lang, 96 ½, of Rockville, MD, died Dec. 6th, 2018 at The Village at Rockville. Born May 16th, 1922 in Sleepy Hollow, PA, she was the oldest child of the late Benjamin Franks & Bertha Fowler Franks. She married Raymond A. Lang March 31st, 1947. Together they celebrated 40 years of marriage until Raymond’s death in 1987. Throughout her life Ruby was faithful to God, her church, country, family, and friends. She was a lifelong Presbyterian. While a member of Rockville Presbyterian Church she was instrumental in publishing the church newsletter for many years. In her later years she was an active member of the Shady Grove Presbyterian Church, PCA. In her youth Ruby played trumpet in the Georges Township High School band, Uniontown, PA, and at a local church. She was a National Honor Society member and a member of the 4H Club. After graduating high school she attended Franklin Commercial College, Connellsville, PA. Upon graduation she worked for the federal government in various departments in Washington, D.C. She was especially proud of working at the National Disabled American Veterans Headquarters. Ruby was a USO hostess at the YMCA, a member of the Columbia Orchestra, D.C., and a volunteer Red Cross worker. It was in Washington, D.C. that she met and married Raymond. He built a house for them in the suburbs of Rockville. After her children were in school, Ruby worked as a secretary at West Rockville Elementary School for many years. Her interests included square dancing, gardening, watching and feeding songbirds, sewing, and church activities. She was devoted to her PA extended family, especially her mother, and often wrote and visited PA many times over the years. Ruby traveled multiple times with her husband to visit Ray’s family in Illinois and Florida. They also enjoyed an overseas trip to Israel with their church family. Ruby took faithful care of her mother-in-law Marie Lang when Marie was in failing health. She was a caring friend to neighbors and colleagues. Ruby is survived by her two daughters, Linda Carol Lang of Silver Spring, and Donna L. Gardner (Joseph) of Piney Point; her two grandsons, Warren Ray Gardner of San Francisco, CA and Eric Joseph Gardner of Dayton, OH; her treasured youngest sibling, Bernice Sesler of Smithfield, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her siblings, Garnet Jones Franks, Marshall Franks, and Iris Bodgen. May God hold Ruby in the palm of his hand forever.

Eugenia Matheos of Kensington, Maryland passed away on December 11, 2018 at 91 years of age. Eugenia was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Gus Matheos, and is survived by her loving children, George Matheos (Stephanie) and Maria Waters (Mike, deceased), and grandchildren, Constantine “Costa” Matheos and Eugenia” Kat” Matheos, a sister, Despina Matheos residing in Athens, Greece, and many relatives from the Island of Chios, Greece where Eugenia was born. A younger sister, Mary Houmis of Norfolk, Virginia, preceded her in death. Eugenia and her husband ran the G & M Luncheonette on Hampden Lane in Bethesda, Maryland for over 20 years.
